Wireless Access Point

One IEEE 802.11 WAP can typically communicate with 30 client systems located within a radius of 100 m. Range can very due to obstructions. Things like walls, trees, even people (though usually not an issue) can seriously impact the quality of the signal. Without a signal there is no network. Most gamers will generally avoid the use of wireless networks due to signal quality and loss. Wireless networks usually don’t handle data as well as a wired network. Wired is usually the most prudent choice for gaming networks.

Server

Servers are usually pretty beefy machines. In corporate environments they usually are in racks set upon racks of other servers. Each machine has a fast processor, quite a bit of RAM and many hard drives to hold a lot of data. For a gaming server however, can just be a regular PC. Depending on how many people are playing on the server, it can need anywhere from 256mb of RAM all the way to 2GB or more. Generally the server should have a stripped down Operating System, such as Windows XP with all the visual elements turned off to minimize OS use of RAM. A fast hard drive with enough space to hold Windows and the game software are usually all that’s needed. 7200rpm hard drives should be the bare minimum in terms of speed.
